US non-profit RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute) published a report in mid-July 2023, produced with the Bezos Earth Fund, finding that wind and solar could generate at least 33% of the world’s electricity by 2030. At the time of publication their share was around 12%.

Key findings

  • Exponential growth — wind and solar installations are growing faster than many earlier forecasts assumed.
  • Fossil generation in decline — according to the report, renewable growth is pushing fossil-fuel generation down.
  • Cheaper energy — solar is already the cheapest form of electricity generation in many markets; the report cites a cost of around USD 40/MWh, with the potential to fall to USD 20/MWh as deployment scales. As RMI’s Kingsmill Bond put it: “the more you install, the cheaper it gets”.

What it means for businesses in BiH

For companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the global trend means solar equipment is more accessible than ever and the economics of self-generation keep improving. At the same time, EU customers increasingly ask for renewable energy in their supply chains. Read more in CBAM and exporters from BiH.
